Indonesia to receive ScanEagle UAVs as part of US grant

Indonesia will receive a complete ScanEagle system with 6 UAVs, similar to those used by the Philippines as shown on the photo.  Photo c/o DZRH.



The Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) will be receiving new Insitu ScanEagle unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) under a US$9.9 million grant by the US government under its Southeast Asia Maritime Security Initiative program.

The deal which involves 1 complete system with 6 ScanEagle UAVs, would be done through the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, with Insitu awarded the contract by the US Department of Defense. The deal also includes other equipment relevant to the operation of the UAVs, and also the technical support services.


It is expected that the contract will be completed by May 2022, although delivery and activation of the ScanEagle UAVs could take place in 2021.


The ScanEagle UAV has a maximum payload of 5 kilograms consisting of camera and sensors, has a cruising speed of 60 knots, and flight ceiling of 20,000 feet.

Other regional users of the ScanEagle include Japan (4 units), Malaysia (2), Philippines (6), and Singapore (12). The Philippines received their ScanEagles also as part of the Southeast Asia Maritime Security Initiative.
