India awards contract for 2 new Talwar-class frigates to Goa Shipyard Ltd.

The Indian Ministry of Defence awarded a contract to build two (2) Talwar-class (Project 1135.6) frigates for the Indian Navy to Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL).

The deal is part of a greater agreement worth around US$1.75 billion between India and Russia to supply 4 frigates including technology transfer. The first 2 will be built in Russia by Yantar Shipyard under a US$950 million contract signed in October 2018, while the last 2 ships are to be built in India.

Once completed, the two locally-built frigates would be the 9th and 10th ships of the class, which are based on the Russian Navy’s Admiral Grigorovich-class frigates also built by Yantar Shipyard. The ships are expected to be delivered to the Indian Navy by June 2026 and December 2026, respectively.

The selection of Goa Shipyard Ltd. Were due to several factors, including their good operating profit, being able to deliver ships ahead of schedule, having the ideal capacity, and also getting Russia’s validation after they conducted their own inspection.

The frigates are expected to be armed with the indigenous Brahmos anti-ship and land attack missile system and Combat Management System
