The Indonesian Ministry of Defence (MoD) recently signed a contract with Germany’s Abeking & Rasmussen to design and construct two new mine countermeasures vessels (MCMV) for the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL).

The new ships are expected to replace the TNI-AL’s Pulau Rengat-class MCMVs, which are based on the Belgian-French-Dutch Tripartite-class mine warfare vessels commissioned in the late 1980s.

The ships would be modernized versions of the German Navy’s Frankenthal-class MCMVs, and are expected to be at least 62 meters long.

Not much details were provided with regards to the specific mine hunting equipment that are included in the deal, although they are expected to be able to launch and recover one rigid hull inflatable boat (RHIB) as well as unmanned minehunting vehicles.
