The Myanmar government will be setting up its coast guard to help safeguard its 2,000 kilometer long coastline and territorial waters, according to Myanmar Minister of Transport and Communication U Thant Zin Maung.

The new coast guard will also ensure law enforcement and safety of sea routes, and play a role in responding to maritime accidents and natural disasters.

It also aims to deal with non-traditional maritime security concerns including human trafficking, smuggling, narcotics, and illegal fishing.

At the moment, the Myanmar government rely on its navy to provide maritime security in addition to traditional naval roles.
