South Korea’s Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA) confirmed that development of a new 120mm self-propelled mortar system has been completed after meeting requirements of the Republic of Korea Army (RoKA).
Development of the new mortar system was led by Hanwha Defense and S&T Dynamics KRW41.3 billion (US$35.7 million), and also involved the participation of around 100 smaller firms.
It has an automatic fire control and reloading system, and is said to have a striking range 2.3 times longer, and has 1.9 times greater firepower than the M30 107mm mortar that it is slated to replace. The system will be installed on a K200 tracked armored vehicle, with the mortar able to rotate 360°.
While there is no confirmation yet, it was mentioned that the new 120mm self-propelled mortar system could be proposed by DAPA for export to other countries.
