Indonesia negotiates with South Korea's DSME for 3 additional Type 209 Submarines

Indonesia has started negotiations with South Korean shipbuilder Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) for a follow-on order of three (3) additional Type 209 (Improved Chang Bogo-class / DSME 1400) diesel-electric submarines for the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL).

It is expected that these submarines will be part of the Nagapasa-class submarines, of which 3 units were scheduled to be built by DSME's shipyard in Okpo, South Korea.

Indonesia's Ministry of Defence as well as officials from state-owned shipbuilder PT PAL are involved in the deal, as they are involved in the construction of several modules of the said submarines. PT PAL received the technology transferred by DSME as part of an earlier deal, allowing them to build submarines including production of construction modules for assembly.

It is expected that the deal would be worth US$ 1.2 billion, which would include training and support package for the Indonesian Navy.

The Indonesian Navy currently operates two German-built Cakra-class submarines, which are also based on the Type 209/1300 diesel electric submarine design by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft and built in the 1980s. The first of the Nagapasa-class submarine, KRI Nagapasa (403) is also currently in service.
