Japan in talks over proposed sale of US-2 Amphibious Aircraft to the Indian Navy

A ShinMaywa US-2 amphibious aircraft of the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF).

It was confirmed by a Japanese Foreign Ministry official that Indian and Japanese officials are in talks over a proposed procurement by India of ShinMaywa US-2 amphibious aircraft.

No specifics were provided although it was mentioned by Japan Foreign Ministry Assistant Press Sec. Natsuko Sakata that discussions are "still continuing" between the two countries.

It was identified that India has the intention to procure up to 12 of the said aircraft from Japan.

Aside from the proposed deal, India and Japan are also pushing for a "2+2" talks between their defense and foreign ministers to tackle issues including defense and security in the region.


Previous discussions and agreements were already signed in the past, including a partnership agreement between the Japanese aircraft's manufacturer ShinMaywa, and India's Mahindra Defence to promote the US-2i ("I" for India) to the Indian Navy for search and rescue and maritime surveillance.

The US-2 is considered one the finest amphibious aircraft model world, and is currently in service only with the Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF). Other countries, like Thailand and Indonesia, have also expressed their desire to purchase the US-2 for their own requirements.
